Error while unpacking program code 5-11

Post by Spriter »

Hi,

I've installed EPIM Pro 7.2 on my computer (Windows 10 up to date and antivirus disabled) and when I launch the program an error windows appears with the message Error while unpacking program code 5-11please report to author !

I uninstalled and reinstalled the program but it doesn't change anything  .

If someone can help me to solve this problem, thank you by advance !

Hello,

please re-download EPIM from http://www.essentialpim.com/get-epim and turn off any anti virus programs that you have for installation time.

Thanks Max for your advice. I did it but it does not change anything.

The problem is only on Windows 10 and with the last release, I tryed to install EpimPro on another computer with Windows 7 and there is no problem...

Don't know what to do... what does the code 5-11 mean ?

Unpacking errors on most software are usually due to something else causing interference on the system such as:
Security software (Even if you disable it some may leave residual effects and may still be causing the issue.)
Windows security settings or group policy settings.
Damage to OS files or registry.
A Microsoft security update that broke something. (This is actually one of the most common. XD)

Ok thank you MetalDrop,

I know that... but I did all I was able to do... If I can't use EpimPro on Win 10... Maybe reinstalling old version of the program :(

You may also check the Portable edition, it should work since there's no installation involved.
Android version of EssentialPIM. Keep all your data in sync!

I resolved my issue by starting the install over and choosing run as Administrator to install it. That worked fine without a problem at all.

That happened to me in the past. Had the same experience today, with newest version, 9.6.1.0.
It threw me for a loop and I figured I'm search the forums.
  1. I don't remember the path that caused it last time, so that's water under the bridge.
  2. Both versions are packed into one installer currently. Because of heightened security from sys admins, I can't run the installer without add'l permissions (much less run the installer as Admin!).
  3. I have been in the habit of:
    • unpacking the installer (using 7-Zip) and
    • extracting the EPIM Pro Portable package, then,
    • unpacking THAT archive, and
    • copying the contents to a new directory. Then,
    • copying any INI, style, or customization files into the new directory.
Because of that, I don't try to use it on my work laptop any more.

Putting the latest version on my private equipment, I missed a step.
I unpacked the installer, extracted the Portable package, then without thinking about it, I ran the portable installer. Heh...

Now that I know what I did wrong, I'll un- and re-install.

Phew.

Since I have had the same issue on the new PC Win 10, I will try to do that.
Funny, bought additional pro license, installed with the above "unpacking" error, and regularly get 30+ sec. launching EPIM on it, so gave up, money gone, the help team does not know why it launches for so long on one Lenovo.

That's not normal.

EPIM:
  • Did you get the installation program from the EPIM website?
  • Did you do the regular install or the portable version?
  • Once it IS started how does it behave?
Database things that might affect EPIM:
  • How large is your database you're trying to work with? (File / Database Management - size in MB/GB, # nodes, etc.)
  • What version has written to the database? (File / Database Management / at the bottom, "This database was opened in:". i.e., "9.9.6, 9.0, 9.9.7, 9.10.1, 9.10.6, 9.10.8, 10.0.2")
  • Where is your database stored? (local drive, external drive, USB stick, cloud)
  • Have you done a db optimize on it? (File / Database Management / Optimize )
  • How does it behave with a fresh database? (i.e., the test database that is builds)
  • Have you tried saving an open database to a new database?
Other SW things that might affect EPIM:
  • Are there other processes going on in the background? (Especially, any HD intensive processes.)
  • Have you tried starting/running EPIM with McAfee/etc., turned off? (Just for testing. Don't run w/out virus protection in general.)
Hardware things that might affect EPIM:
  • How old is the Lenovo?
  • How much RAM is installed
  • How much Ram is free when EPIM is running?
  • How much free space is left on the HD?
  • Has the HD been defragged recently? (Probably not a problem)
  • Have you run test/repair on the HD?
  • Is EPIM installed on the same drive as the OS?
  • Is EPIM or DB installed on the same drive as any HD intensive programs?
Just some things to look at / think about.
If I ask, it's probably because I have learned the hard way. :-D

I hope it works out, and we can figure out what's what for you.

I've been using EPIM for ...
... for a long time, and I really think it's one of the best things on the market.

Granted, I could never get the hang of EverNote or OneNote - but EPIM has been a staple of my attempts to organize my work and personal notes, for longer than I can remember. Back when the versions were in the 1.'s and 2.'s.

:-D
