Step-by-step instructions to set up Android/PC sync over USB?

Post by littlebigman »

Hello

I checked the Knowledge Base before asking but there's nothing there so I went ahead without knowing what I'm doing:
  1. Installed and ran Essential PIM on a Windows host
  2. Installed and ran the Essential PIM applet for Android; The phone is connected through USB
  3. My firewall software detected a new IP network (169.something); I clicked OK
  4. On the phone, enable USB Tethering
  5. In Essential PIM for Android, clicked on "PC Sync", opened Menu, selected Connect Manually.
Now, I'm prompted for the IP address (default port: 21114) of the Windows PC where EPIM is running, although a quick check shows that EPIM isn't listening on any port.

What IP address should I type?

Thank you.

Thanks, but still no go:
1. Enabled USB Tethering on phone. Windows spins its disk, and the software firewall prompts me whether I want to connect to a new network. I say Yes, and here are the two networks:
EPIM.Comodo.FW.jpg
2. From the phone, I try to connect manually through USB, but can't connect to the PC by using either 192.168.0.12 or 192.168.42.129:
EPIM.Sync.Cant.Connect.jpg
Which IP address should I use to hit the PC?

Thank you.

PS1: There's a wrong word in the help document mentioned above: "follow the on screen wizard instructions unless you are on the Pairing Device step" -> replace "unless" with "until".

PS2: Out of curiosity, why didn't you use the ADB-based solution that works fine for MyPhoneExplorer?

---
Edit: Solved: 1) Use the temporary network created when enabling USB Tethering and 2) Make sure you type the IP address of the host, not the Gateway IP address.

Still, syncing EPIM through USB is more involved than syncing with MyPhoneExplorer: 1) USB Tethering must be enabled through the Settings app (not sure yet, but it might disable itself after X minutes), 2) In the desktop app, click on File > Synchronization > <Phone name>, and 3) open EPIM and go through its Menu to connect manually. It'd be easier if the EPIM Android application ran in the background, waiting for sync requests from the desktop.

Good, glad you were able to make it work. About mentioned points:
1. Thank you, fixed.
2. We weren't and still aren't sure many people would use the USB sync solution and therefore opted for much less time consuming one.

Do you now have stats about how people sync their PC with EPIM?

USB is simpler because it doesn't rely on a wifi hotspot being available; A simple USB cable is all it takes. Besides, the USB cable also recharges the phone at the same time and transfer is probably faster than wifi.

If you can, it'd be cool if you modified the EPIM Android application so that it…
  1. Enables USB Tethering when the phone starts
  2. Remembers how the user wants to sync
  3. Runs in the background, so that the user has nothing more to do than simply hit File > Sync on the desktop.

We estimate around 95% of users use wireless sync.
1. 2. Thank you, noted.
3. Impossible as the sync should always be initiated from the client and in our case that's the Android device.

I still benefit from the USB charge even though I use Wifi for sync. Works great!

Link above:

"x is a software designed to..."

FYI, y manages to sync through USB without having to enable USB Tethering every time.
