My problem, however, was not not backing up the database - it was accidently deleting the release of the software I was using before (3.0 Beta 2) without having a backup (usually keep a backup of both the software and the database). Seems like this thread died a bit. Someone should take upon them to keep an updated list of these great programs. I use some of them myself. Here's a few other great free pieces of software that has not already been mentioned (or that I didn't notice, at least).

Another user reported getting the portable version to run under linux using CrossOver Office - and it has also turned out to work for me (EssentialPIM Pro Portable 2.2 / Gutsy Gibbons). So this is probably worth looking into.
