In particular, if I buy the add-ons today, then in 2 years upgrade to EPIM v4 (or whatever), must I buy the add-ons again? In other words, when does their use "expire"?

I agree with you, 1-2% is not a big problem if a fix is coming.

Recall however that my particular machine is spiking nearly to 10% every 10 seconds, which is a problem. If you have any ideas as to why this might be I would like to know.

That's great news! The release I have which shows no CPU utilization is v1.5 Pro (downloaded 2005-07-06).
