Notes - deleting

I imported about 50 notes from outlook. These ranged from a single line to multi-lines. I first started to delete by highlightingn and then clicking on delete. When I got to the end of the list all the deleted notes were there! I then deleted them by pressing on DEL - this worked. I then started to create new notes and inserting the smaller ones beneath them. And then I noticed a number of notes (which I hadn't touched) were duplicated ie samename(1)! What was going on and why?
