German translation of dates and weekdays

Post by lk »

Hello there,

there are some quirks in the German translation of EPIM for Android (v4.53), especially concerning dates and weekdays in the calendar module. If you're interested, I will post a list and some screenshots.

It took some time, but here they are (tested with EPIM 4.5.3 on my BQ M4.5 with Android 5.1):

The date format in German is generally Day.Month.Year - some EPIM elements show the dates correctly this way, but many don't; they use the format "Month Day", which is VERY unusual here.

Examples: This is how a correct German date looks like:
correct.png
This format is unusual in German:
#1
wrong.png
(replace "Februar 26" with "26. Februar" (26[dot][space]Februar)

#2 The 2x2 widget is very useful and handy, but the formatting is ugly (see attached file widget.png). The space for the long weekday and month strings simply isn't sufficient. Perhaps it would be better to abbreviate both of it (take the first two letters from the weekday and the first three letters from the month string and you're fine, this is quite usual):
widget.png
widget.png (16.05 KiB) Viewed 5030 times
#3 The week view doesn't show the whole week (see week.png: Feb 27 - Mär...) - maybe a slightly smaller font would be sufficient? Furthermore, a space between "KW" and the number of the calendar week would look better.
week.png
#4 The year view definitely shows wrong abbreviations for the weekdays. It should be "Mo Di Mi Do Fr Sa So" (there seems to be room for two letters for each weekday)
year.png
#5 The "About" window shows a strange line "(leeres Textelement)" (which means "empty text element"):
about.png
Hope this helps. If I find more quirks that do not fall into any of the mentioned categories, I will post them here.

Now I have installed v4.6.1 and a lot has improved indeed. I have numbered the five sections in my original posting and am referencing to these numbers here:

#2: The day/month order in the first line of each item is now correct but unfortunately the weekday is gone in this version. Furthermore, if a calendar item extends over more than one day, the order is still wrong. One more suggestion: Always put the year after the month in the "Agenda" view, this is VERY handy if this view is shown as a result of a search!

#3: It looks much better now due to the abbreviated weekdays, however, the day/month order is still wrong. You take the first three letters of the German month names, which is fine, but it would be consequent if you did the same with "März", which should be abbreviated to "Mär".

#4 is fixed.

#5: Nothing has changed, the meaningless line is still there.

#2. Weekdays are back in the 4.7 version, which is in the Beta stage at the moment. Let me know if you'd like to try it out.
Which order is wrong, could you please elaborate more? And year usually comes after month. Do see it differently?
#3. You mean it should look like 30. März instead of März 27?
#5. Confirm, will fix!

Yes, I'm willing to test v4.7 beta - let me know where to get it. The order in German is always Day.Month.Year, so today, April 2nd, 2017 is either "02.04.2017" or "2. April 2017", but never "April 2, 2017", "04/02 2017" or similar.

And if you prefer to abbreviate the month names instead of using their numerical counterparts, it would be consequent to abbreviate them the same way for each month (using the first three letters is quite common here, so "Januar" will be "Jan" and "März" will be "Mär").

Please opt-in as a beta tester here: https://play.google.com/apps/testing/co ... sentialpim and get the latest version straight form the Google Play store. Or download from our web site:
www.essentialpim.com/download/beta/EssentialPIM47.apk
How would you list the following period: Apr 3-9? Like this: 3.-9. Apr?

Okay, here we are:

First of all: Why does EPIM for Android v4.7 Beta 2 need new permissions (GPS location)?

Yes, you can choose between:

3.-9. Apr
03.-09. Apr
3.-9. April
03.-09. April

But NEVER Apr 3.-9. or similar.

So #2 should read:

Montag, 3. April
Montag, 03. April
(or similar, note the dots after the number!)

#5 is fixed indeed.

GPS is for location aware reminders.

Got it about the date format, will fix. Thanks.

I just updated to v5.10, and it's still not fixed completely:

#2 is still there (try an appointment which stretches over more than one day):

#5 has been reintroduced:
about.png
The details of an appointment still shows the wrong order (month day instead of day month):

Thanks, will fix the number 2 and the last screenshot. #5 shows the translator's name/address.

Both issues are fixed in the most recent version of EPIM for Android. Thank you. If I find any more date formatting errors in Calendar I will post them here.

There are still some minor quirks in the German translation - if you are interested, I will put together a list of them (here, in a separate thread or via mail).

Haven't had much time recently, but today I found another one, on the "Day" view of the calendar (I rarely use this view on my phone). EPIM for Android v5.2.1:
Screenshot_2017-10-02-20-25-16.png
It should read in German "2. Okt 2017" instead of "Okt 2, 2017".
