unfortunately creation of Linux version would require substantial amount of resources..so far we do not see how we could reimburse them.

I submitted EssentialPIM to the winehq database. It DOES install (tested on Ubuntu 7.04) , but exits usually with various memory/stack errors.
I was successful in creating a few notes, unsuccessful in importing my database I created in windows.

The following data from tests: (1.95 version of essentialpim)

I have been using EPIM PRO Portable for about a year now and have not been able to live without it. Now, first let me state that I am an IT Manager/Software Engineer (Basic, Pascal, C/C++/C# .NET,Assembly,COBOL,FORTRAN, and many many different scripting languages) With the advent of many of the newer run times, it does not make sense to me why you would only support Windows. I have seen very bad programming done in very BAD languages (read Visual Basic) usually these programmers to not have the skill to do anything high level. However, there are languages out there that can be used which are fully capable of creating a cross-platform app..

My point: I have been using EPIM PRO Portable and have been extremely happy. However, I came to the EPIM site in a hope that you would officially be supporting Linux.

Your portable software is one of the nicest Information Managers that I have used (for personal use) Unfortuantely, I am being force to migrate my data away from your software, for lack of "official" support of Linux. It is a complete shame and I am truly frustrated over it.

I was even looking forward to buying the network version for my company to use. Without cross-platform compatibility it is simply a waste of our time. We will most likely use a web-based software internally.

I simply cannot continue to support this software, for lack of knowledge of the programmers and/or management.

I am being forced to use another product, normally this would not be a problem. But I really do like the software.

The reason we do not plan version for Linux is simple- it will not pay off.
I hope you agree, that good development costs money. There is, however, no clear commercial model for such applications as EPIM. Similar (but inferior) programs are available in standard *nix packages and users are used to it. There is simply no market for a commercial version of EPIM on *nix platform, the way we see it. Your case might be an exception but costs of licenses sold to you will not justify migration costs of course.
That said, I must mention that EPIm Server can perfectly run on Linux machine, only clients need to be using Windows. That's is fine for most our clients. Servers are often Linuxes, client machines mostly are Windows.

I use Linux and am ready to pay (not a lot for I am still a poor student) since EPIM is the best program I have tested for managing contacts, calendar, etc...

So I just post this reply in the forum "Linux version" hoping it will motivate you to enter Linux world.

Hey, Linux dudes: I got the portable USB version working under Mint Linux by using Wine, and by putting a copy of MSVCP60.dll in the folder on the USB drive (I found the .dll for download after a web search). Theoretically, since the missing .dll is on the USB drive, it should work on any Wine installation, but that's only a theory.

EssentialPIM works on Linux Ubuntu...

I have been put into the situation where I can work only with Linux. I downloaded the EPIM 3.04 Free and run with Wine. I had no problems whatsoever: no additional DLLs, nothing additional at all.

Therefore, the problem with porting to Linux was solved. I mean it looks like there is no point to do this anymore. However, if EPIM team will just do some additional work like checking each version for Wine compatibility, providing some recommendations, etc.. then it would be just very beneficial to the product itself.

Naaah, not so much, anymore. With version 3.52, attempts to change calendar or contacts records result in an "OLE Error 80004001" message when running under WINE in Linux.

Oh, well. It was fun while it lasted. Back to looking for a PIM that works in Linux.

Thank you for letting me know. I was just about to upgrade to the newer version. I guess I stick with 3.23.

I have a real zoo of computers now: Windows and Linux are all together.

I just tried the free version in WINE under Linux, and I didn't get the OLE linking error, although I still do with the paid version. So what I'm temporarily doing is this: I use the paid USB version on my Windows computers (back up the USB version and the database files; I just had a USB stick die, and I had to go find a compatible download that would open my database files; what a pain this whole upgrading procedure has turned into!). When I need to use EssentialPIM on my Linux box, I extract the free version into a directory, then run it under WINE, and manoeuvre around to the data file on my USB stick and open it from there.

I can change and update data that way. I can't print calendars, for example, with only my Business appointments showing. I don't use the email program (T-Bird is free!). It's a kluge, but it works - or it does until the EPIM admins decide that they don't want data files backwards-compatible with the free versions.
