Wifi sync'ing

Post by Dr. Richard Williams »

When I am at home, I can sync between my laptop and android. But I cannot anywhere else. I can an error message that my firewall connection (on my laptop) prevents syncing. I have gone in to the control panel and opened the firewall and changed it to "off" and the error message remains. Also, within the control panel's firewall, when you open the "exceptions" tab, essentialpim is listed. But the fact remains, the sync only works at home.

One more thing, I have deleted the sync and then created it at the coffee shop and it gives me the same error message.

Any suggestions

Was you phone connected to the same wi-fi network in the coffee chop as your laptop?

Interesting.. the only guess I have is that connection through 21114 port was either disabled or restricted.

I like your desktop software, but your wireless sync system has a lot of holes in it. I have given up using it and gone back to a 1-way sync through google to the phone for two reasons: I can sync wherever I have a wireless connection, and the calendar data on the phone remains.

I have sent 3 support emails with no luck yet. I have done a factory data reset on my phone. Nothing I have tried has kept the calendar data on the phone, as it vanishes in about 30 minutes after a wireless sync with your android sync to the desktop.

So, I have gone back to the 1 way sync through google. Please "fix" the sync between the android and your desktop software.

Please check whether all the calendars are visible on your phone. You can do that in the Calendar's settings. If you make some of the calendars invisible and that's the calendar where EPIM synchronizes its appointments into, the events will not be shown while still being there actually.
If all of your calendars are always visible, you might want to try to disable Google sync on your phone for the calendar for a while for testing purposes and see whether the appointments will start disappearing again then or not.

Your suggestions are sound. However, I called Verizon and confirmed that I could uncheck the google sync between my android and google, so I did this. I have tried your "direct" sync between the android and your desktop software, and have used various settings. I have opened the android calendar and checked all of your calendars. I have also done a sync where I have left them unchecked. I have done a sync where I have deleted the sync process within Essentialpim and then created one that did not create calendars on the phone, and have done one which did create them.

The long and short of it, the calendar events on the phone vanish within 30 minutes. When I get home, if not there, I will repeat the direct sync (bypassing google) and the sequence repeats.

Interestingly enough the contacts are fine using your sync process.

So, until something works (1. I need your sync to work whenever I have an internet connection (and not just at home), and 2. I need the data to remain on the phone.) I will go back to using the 1-way sync between your software to google to the phone. This works. I look forward to the day that I can do a direct 2-way sync between the phone and Essential....

Interesting situation, indeed. And for clarification purposes - when you create appointments manually on your phone they never disappear? Also, do you happen to know if there's some sync service running on your device every 30 mins? At the moments I can't think of anything else rather than a 3-rd party sync service that could remove newly synced appointments..

To answer your question, if I add an event on my android and save it, immediately all of the events, I repeat, all of the events are erased, eradicated, vanish.

When I used your android to pc sync, using my home network, I stopped all of the sync's on my phone (except for gmail, which I only use when I buy a program in the android market). I normally did a one way sync (from epim to android 2.3.4)

Thanks but were those vanished events initially synchronized from EPIM or they were created manually on your device? What happens with the newly manually created event - will it also disappear?

Today is the 25th. There was an update on Monday of this week (23rd) for "essentialpim" on the android (release version 1.3.6) and with it I decided to try a direct sync (after shutting of the google sync on the phone). I did, and the calendar events have remained and not gone away on the phone. Additionally, I tried adding an event on the phone and that worked.

Now, if only a sync could work when not on my home network. Oh well.

We're actually thinking about implementing something among these lines (sync via cloud). So; will see how it goes. Thanks.

Update: we finally were able to reproduce the issue with disappearing events. It only happens when new calendars are being created on Android devices for each of EPIM categories. There's a temporary solution, while we're investigating the issue. Go to synchronization settings and uncheck the "Create calendars in Android for each of EPIM categories in EPIM" checkbox. Should help.
