Contact tree
Hello,
again I struggle with other problems now.
Contacts:
In the Tree-View I see a node "My Contacts" and "Collected Addresses". How to add another node i.e. "hotels".
Reason for that is, that I want to sort my hotels by country like that:
Hotels
|----USA
|----Spain
|----China
|----Russia
How is this possible. I did not find a way to add an additional node.

Re: Contact tree
I suppose you are using Pro version. In this case use "Add Group" menu on the left panel.

Hi Max,
thx, yes I use the pro version. But your proposal will also not work. Because I need a main node like "My Contacts" and
not a subnode.
This is the structure I need:
My Contacts
|----private
|----business
|----others
Hotels
|----USA
|----Spain
|----China
|----Russia

This is my Structure
My Contacts
>Hotels
>>USA
>>Spain

>>Russia
>Private
>> Family
>> Friends
>others
If i understand you right i have the same "problem" but solved it with another subfolder.
So A contact which shares my Family-Folder is member of the group "Private" AND "Family"

Re: Contact tree
Texter how did you create these subgroups ? As far as I know this is not possible, at least I can not find how to do that. Contacts and passwords both allow addition of groups, but not subgroups.
In Notes or Tasks, yes there you can create subgroups, but not in the fore-mentioned two groups.
Another remark, thanks to the poster of this topic , is that I started thinking about the name of My contacts (and my passwords). I now think it should be Contacts Base and Passwords Base (or a better synonym). In my Dutch translation file I changed these two name of My contacts and my passwords.
epim-user;
As long as subgroups is not possible (or we do not know how to create them), there is only one, not to pretty BUT working solution.
My Contacts
Contacts--private
Contacts--business
Contacts--others
Hotels--USA
Hotels--USA--California
Hotels--USA--Florida
Hotels--Spain
Hotels--China
Hotels--Russia
Create labels in which you use the base and subgroup (possible sub-subgroup) names.
To make it better visible add seperators between the group names, spaces are also possible but can be confusing if you also would have names with spaces in them.

Re: Contact tree
Hi, thank you for asking. I just tried it again.
The solution is quite simple:
create the group and move it via drag&drop into your desired folder.
In this way you can rearrange and create your "folder system" or "contact tree" by yourself:
My Contacts (by default)
My Contacts - Group
My Contacts - Group - Subgroup
My Contacts - Group - Subgroup - Subsubgroup
(in addition as many groups, subgroups an susubgroups you like)
edit: grammar

Re: Contact tree
Okay, drag and drop works, great, learned something new.
So there are no commands in the menu, but you can create subgroups. That way my remark about changing my contacts and my passwords to base contacts and base passwords (or all contacts and all passwords) makes more sense for me.
Without drag and drop the solution to the question of epim-user is;
My Contacts (contacts base)
Contacts--private
Contacts--business
Contacts--others
Hotels--USA
Hotels--USA--California
Hotels--USA--Florida
Hotels--Spain
Hotels--China
Hotels--Russia
with drag and drop epim-user should be able to create the structure he wants.

|--Contacts
|--private
|--business
|--others
|--Hotels
|--USA
|--USA
|--California
|--Florida
|--Spain
|--China
|--Russia
With multiple selection you can show a hotel in California in the groups California, USA and Hotels.
Default will all contacts be shown in the base (my) contacts.

Re: Contact tree
I use EPIM Pro 90 RC1 and RC2.
Today I have to deal with exporting some grouped items to a new epim-file.
I have three main-groups with each one or two levels of subgroups. (maingroup means the next level behind "My Contacts" or "My Passwords").
Now I wan´t to export one of the main-groups with all it´s sub-group-items. But there is a problem:
It is not so as PeCe told: If I mark a couple of subgroups, there would be shown all the items of the marked groups!?
I only see the items of the latest group marked.
Further, the items only contains the smallest level of subgroup in their groups-field. There are not all groups of the tree they belong to.
This is why export of a complete maingroup doesn´t run.
And why it is difficult to search: If I search in a maingroup for an item using the search-field, search will only be done in the maingroup but not in his subgroups.
What is the sense by this? Normally, the complete group-path for an item should be contained in its group-field. Otherwise - if I have two subgroups with the same name - I can´t recognize to which tree an item belongs to.
If there is no sense, I want to suggest to take the whole path in the groups-field if all items.

Re: Contact tree
Hello,
1.- I could not reproduce the problem with export. Please post screenshots how exactly you do an export
2.- Search works in selected group, we will see if that needs to be improved
3.- I agree, that "Membership" field should contain the full path to the group- will fix that.

Re: Contact tree
For export I will mark all concerning groups to get all of their items. But when I mark all groups, I only get the items of the group I marked last. Please view my screenshots (I rubbed out details of items).
To finish the export, I would go over menu file|export|contacts|selected and then to a new EPIM-database.
The result is: no contact will be exported, I´ll get an EPIM-database with contact-groups, but without contacts.
Okay, I understand, I have not only to mark the groups, but the contacts itself. But how to do it, when they aren't displayed completely?
(The export of some selected tasks runs, an export of contacts of one selected subgroup of contacts too).
This concerns passwords too.
Is there any chance to export from a Ver. 9-database like intended in the next few days? It is urgent and important for my work.

Re: Contact tree
A workaround, not perfect, but faster than exporting each group separately (try out on a copy of a database, just in case):
- Create a new contacts group "temporary group".
- Right-Click on the group's name, Edit.
- Open Group Members tab, Select members.
- In the filter choose a group of contacts you want to export, in the list of contacts below click on the first contact, then holding Shift click on the last (to select all contacts in the group), then button [->]. Do it for each of the groups (and subgroups) you want to export.
- Now that all the contacts are in 2 groups at the same time (the original one and the temporary), you can export the temporary group into a new database.
- Delete the temporary group in the original and new databases, so the contacts are once again only in the original groups.

Thank You Max, but I don´t want to export all contacts. I need to export some branches only.
