"EPIMs of the Net"

Post by yokozuna »

I know, I know, it is written "General talks about EssentialPIM" but I cannot find any other place to write about other programs which you can find on the Net and which are freeware, well done, but relatively unknown to the public (but I believe they will be in the future), just like EPIM. Do you know such programs?

I want to mention two of them, maybe I will write a bit more when I will come back home.

1. KeePass Password Store - a passwor safe (http://keepass.sourceforge.net). I think it can be somehow replaced by EPIM's notes :D

2. FastStone Image Viewer - much better than Picasas and IrfanViews, far more intuitive, faster and with better algorithms that DO NOT add any additional noise or blur. Can be found here: http://faststone.org/FSViewerDetail.htm

Do you know more discoveries like the above?

Thanks, yokozuna, for your hint with "FastStone". I know VallenJpegger, Irfanview, ACDSee V7, Thumbs Plus and so on. But after 10 minutes I think FastStone will be the very best - very quick, very small, very good to work with it - fantastic!
Have a look to your personal messages please, yokozuna.
Good morning nice guys,
I'll tell you my favorites of free programs here:
1. "Exifer" from http://www.exifer.friedemann.info/
Supports EXIF (up to 2.2) and IPTC data in JPEG and TIFF files ...
2. "Hallo northern sky" from http://www.hnsky.org/software.htm
Its a free planetarium program for Windows ...
3. "CDex" from http://cdexos.sourceforge.net/
CDex is a tool to do all sorts of things audio related ...
Last but not least (because almost free):
4. "Total Commander" from http://www.ghisler.com/
The best file manager for Windows with two file windows side by side and with built-in FTP client ...
You should have a look to all of it!

I took the courage and assigned this topic a Sticky status so that it becomes more visible for other users. I guess good freeware programs deserve that

Winfried, I am glad that you like it! :D

admin, thank you for supporting my idea :D

I will give some other examples:
1. RSSowl, http://www.rssowl.org , a cool RSS reader. Does not deserve .NET Framework (I hate it!), because it is a pure Java client. Very flexible, works well with different fonts (like Polish, Russian, Japanese).
2. Foxit PDF Reader http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php - light speed reader that does not need installation. I use Polish Windows and I can read Japanese articles - the original client have problems with it. A good choice for slower machines.
3. Weather Watcher http://www.singerscreations.com The author of the program describes it in this way: "Weather Watcher is your personal Windows desktop weather station. Automatically retrieve the current conditions, hourly forecast, daily forecast, detailed forecast, severe weather alerts, and weather maps for almost any city world-wide. The current conditions can be quickly viewed via the Weather Watcher system tray icon. " Do I have to add anything to his words?
4. XanaNews http://www.wilsonc.demon.co.uk/d9xananews.htm There are many newsgroup readers, but this one beats them all. I have to write that it is the only one which supports all standards correctly (both technical standards and the rules of Netiquette). It looks very good, not so spartan as 40tude Dialog (http://www.40tude.com/dialog) which, BTW, ain't bad at all.

Winfried, do you edit graphic files? If so, I have some good programs for you.

1. PhotoFiltre http://photofiltre.free.fr/frames_en.htm can easily replace Photoshop Elements, or PhotoExplorer. The program has an important advantage over Adobe programs - it is better optimized for AMD processors (Adobe prefers Intel). I think that most computers in Poland are based on AMD, and the percentage of AMD users in Germany is even higher (because of FAB30 in Dresden, so the costs of the CPU can be lower).
2 & 3. if you take digital pictures you will need Opanda IEXIF, as well as PhotoFilter, the first one will enable manipulating tags, the other one replaces costly filters just by clicking buttons. It emulates them, and I am amazed by the quality of emulation. Both can be found here: http://www.opanda.com
4. HP Image Zone http://www.hp.com/united-states/ize/download.html is good for two things - printing your files (you do not need a HP printer) and sharing your pictures online. Quite funny thing, the program is a rebadged version of Kodak EasyShare http://www.kodak.com/eknec/PageQuerier. ... cale=en_US HP software is better for non Americans because Kodak will accept your e-mail address (needed for login) but not allow for downloading the program. If you are American the Kodak site bahaves in the way you should expect from it. If you are not it will spam your account instead only  HP IZ 1.1 equals to KES 3.0. Kodak released a new version of KES a month ago (v.4.0) which will be identical with HP IZ 1.5 expected in late March.

Hi Przemo yokozuna,
yes I do and I like it to test new graphics/photo programs. So many thanks to you for your tipps, I'll try it all and I feel happy about your message.
But we should not forget we are guests of EPIM here and our dialogue blossom out into a chat between you and me.
Sorry, dear guys you browse here, I hope you all can find some animation for interesting new programs.
I'll continue my chat with yokozuna with personal messages in the future.
Thanks for your grasp!

Winfried, I think that the most important that anyone can benefit from the programs. Some of them are completely unknown, however, they are really good. For example Media Catalog Studio (http://www.maniactools.com/soft/media_c ... ndex.shtml - something like Picasa but for audio files) or Abakt (http://www.xs4all.nl/~edienske/abakt - a free backup tolol, it works with 7-Zip, which is the best compressor, much better than Zip, Ace or Rar, and it is free too) areperfect but no one knows them, however, they worth a try. So I think that the thread plays a positive role :)

Just adding my 2 cents.

1) ArsClip and Rename Master. Both apps written by the same guy and are free. ArsClip is a highly customizable clipboard extender. Just hit CTRL+SHIFT+V to bring up the list of items and select what you want to paste. Rename Master is a powerful file/folder renaming tool. http://www.joejoesoft.com

2) Maxthon Browser. Another IE shell replacement, but so far it's been the best one for me. I tried Avant Browser for a while but something just didn't quite do it for me. Built-in popup and ad blocking with a huge community and tons of useful user-made plugins! http://www.maxthon.com

3) Konfabulator. Not free ($25), but a nice little app that can run "widgets" to perform different functions. You can also create your own if you know javascript. http://www.konfabulator.com

4) Magic Notes. Not free ($15), but a nice cheap sticky note app. There might be some better free ones out there, but I haven't come across them yet. http://www.magicnotes.com

5) PureText. A nice free app for pasting clipboard items as pure text. Just copy the text, click on the PT icon in the systray, and paste! http://stevemiller.net/puretext/

6) FavOrg. Want to keep those favicons from websites? This little app will do the trick. No real link, so you'll have to google "favorg 1.4" and you should be able to find it. I don't think it's supported anymore.

7) For the system admins out there, there are plenty of nice little apps at http://www.sysinternals.com

8 ) ExplorerXP. Another Windows Explorer replacment. Probably not as many features as Total Commander, but it's free and an excellent replacement. http://www.explorerxp.com

I think that's about all I have for now.

A good suite of programs

Post by DominicW »

These programs are opensource and are all free products, one is an awesome notebook style program with typical Tree functionality and plug in development support:

Keynote is the program I mentioned, but the author has others there that are quite cool.

While we are at it, Treepad is an excellent outliner.
www.treepad.com
It has a free version, and a Linux version as well. You can use the same database in both operating systems.
An outstanding program.

Just a passing note. I have been using Keynote for the past 7-8 months. I use it mostly to organize my class notes. It works just great and is perfect for my purposes.

I would like to add another s/w to the list: Wordweb
http://wordweb.info/
Its a quite good and handy tool while editing/creating docs :) The freeware version is good enough for simple everyday use.

This free tool speeds up Adobe Reader's launch time by disabling the majority of plugins that are, quite franky, completely useless for most users...

You can download it on the right of this page (current releases)
http://www.tnk-bootblock.co.uk/
I think it's great!
