Linking Documents to a Group or a Contact

Can someone walk me thru the process of linking a document (Word file, pdf, etc) to a group or an individual contact? I've read about linking, but the process just doesn't seem very intuitive to me.

Simply drag&drop the file into an open contact or contact group window, then choose whether to attach the file to the item or link to it. Hope that clarifies the procedure.
