Delay when shifting between nodes in the Note Tree

Post by radams »

I'm using EPIM Pro Portable v3.54 on Win7 (at work) and WinXP (at home). I have upgraded my database through numerous EPIM upgrades. (The database management window says it has been opened in: 3.22, 3.23, 3.51, 3.52, 3.54)

I use the NOTES feature for my work journals (projects, tasks, time, etc). I've recently encountered a problem where my main journal node is taking 8-10 seconds to open whenever I switch to it. I'm experiencing similar delays when shifting to other nodes that contain content from my main journal that I've cut-n-pasted into those Notes (for archiving and organizational purposes). I'm noticing that the CPU usage spikes to 45-50% when clicking on these nodes before the note finally displays.

My work journal notes use a lot of Rich Text features like multiple font sizes and styles, bullet lists, text color and shading, and indentation to help me with my organization and documentation. My database file is only about 20M and I have my database encrypted (however, I tested removing the encryption and it didn't seem to make a difference).

Please help. The sluggishness when shifting to/from these notes is starting to become unwieldy.

Hello,

how many Notes do you have in total?
Please also do one test- create a new database. Now open 2 instances of EPIM- one has your database and one- new database. Copy-paste the "slow" Note from your database into a new database. Now check on a new database- does it open fine?

Total notes is about 110.

Per your request, I created another database, added a note and had no problems, then I created a new note and cut-n-pasted a "slow" note into it from my other database and ..bam... slow response shifting to that note from one of the faster ones. I didn't even paste in that much content... maybe 80-100 lines of text.

I also tested and discovered that if I export the "slow" note to RTF then import it back as a separate note, the new note displays fast even thought it's the same content as the "slow" note. This makes me wonder if there's something in the RTF causing the problem that's being corrected during an export/import?

I could send you the test database if you'd like. Let me know.

II've got lot of notes. When I open EPIM PRO Port 3.54 and go from one node tot another (with lot of content in it, in tables) it takes about 8 seconds to show the content of that node (those seconds it opens the node, but there is no content vissable for 8 seconds) ). After that when I change tot another node and back again tot the 'big' node, it takes 2 secondes to show the content. Changing to nodes with little content takes less then a second. This is the same in other versions of Epim, so must be that Epim has trouble with showing tables in notes.

Hope this helpes to increase speed of changing nodes.

Hi,

thank you! We reproduced the problem. Where did you get the slow note's text? Was it copy-pasted from somewhere, or...?

I've setup a series of Notes Folders in my EPIM based upon the "Getting Things Done" strategy. My main "Today's Tasks" Note is the one that had been slowing down the most.

My "Today's Tasks" note is my "workhorse" note. It's the one I use to capture and organize my thoughts and todos into a coherent plan. As such it's constantly being hit with cut-n-pastes from various sources (the web, Word docs, text docs, RTF, etc). Plus I use lots of formatting in this note to help me organize myself (bullets, different size Fonts, different color Fonts, hyperlinks, etc).

The "slownote" text in the note I sent in the test database came from a cut-n-paste of some of my most recent Tasks which I then scrambled so there wouldn't be any legible proprietary or personal information . However, all the RTF formatting should have remained intact. As soon as I pasted the text into the test database, it slowed down when I shifted to that node.

I would be hard pressed to be able to tell you exactly where all the text in the sample I sent you originally came from.
